San Miguel de Allende has been charming visitors for decades with its colorful streets, art and mercados. Conde Nast Traveler readers have named San Miguel de Allende the Best Small City in the World in 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2021, and we won’t be surprised if they are number one again in 2023.
And now there’s another reason to visit this compact artisan community… wineries! Our tours will show you the best wineries just outside of the city, the Sistine Chapel of Mexico in Atotonilco, the pueblo magico of Dolores Hidalgo where the Mexican War of Independence began, and so much more!
Heart of Mexico Wine Tours is our private tour company. Tom and I (Tiffany) are your English-speaking tour guides with over 40 years wine industry experience. We have lived in Mexico for 5 years and know the best places for local cuisine, wine, and artisanal shopping.

San Miguel is surrounded by magic towns, and one of the most significant is Dolores Hidalgo. The town is named after Father Hidalgo who taught the townspeople the art of talavera and uttered El Grito– The call that began the Mexican War of Independence against the Spanish in 1810. Shop for talavera, walk through the plaza and taste uniquely flavored ice cream (mezcal, anyone?) and have time to explore the mercado and museums.
Next, visit the oldest winery in the state of Guanajuato known for its wines and architectural design. Here you can taste wines of your choice and nibble on an appetizer. On Three Kings Day, our friends Michelle and Alex invited us to go on a day trip with them to a little town called Acambay. Alex’s grandfather grew up in Acambay and the family had some land just outside of town. We didn’t know anything about Acambay, so we were excited to see something new. Located…
As we get older the presents matter less to us, and the experiences matter more. Our Christmas tree is full of souvenirs from our travels, but there’s always space for more ornaments and lights. If we had unlimited funds for Christmas lights and decorations, I’m sure I could compete against any of the Disney…
A question we are asked often is “Did we sell our house before we moved abroad”? Well, yes we had planned to, but no it didn’t happen. We planned to put our house up for sale 3 months before we moved to Mexico, but it didn’t work out the way we hoped. Here’s the Story……
Known worldwide for its talavera, Barroque architecture and mole poblano, Puebla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a true treasure of Mexican life from past to present. Puebla was not created until 1531 after the Spanish Conquest where it became an important stop on the trade route between Veracruz and Mexico City. For travelers…
One of the reasons why we chose to live in Queretaro was because of its multi-cultural food scene. Queretaro’s restaurant scene may not be as well-known as Mexico City or San Miguel de Allende, but its flair for traditional, contemporary and international cuisines cannot be denied. Queretaro has restaurants ranging from Korean BBQ and Indian…
If you are wondering why it takes me so long to write about daily life in Mexico, it’s because nothing can ever be completed in one day or one week. It sometimes takes a few weeks or even months to get a resolution on what we think would be a simple matter. The internet service…
